Hi Mark,
Probably the best way to go is to use a relay that is energized by the
ignition, to switch the power to the thermostatic switch. Conveniently, the
factory fuse panel (if you're using it) provides all the connections you need,
and eliminates any significant load on the stock wiring (with exception of the
large brown lead that powers the entire electrical system anyway).

If you're using the stock fusebox and standard relays (the cube ones using the
Bosch numbering):
-Connect from terminal 1 on the fusebox (where the brown wires connect) to a 20
amp fuse holder, and from the fuse holder to terminal 30 on the relay.
-Connect from terminal 87 on the relay to the 'hot' side of the thermoswitch.
-Connect from terminal 3 on the fusebox (where the white wires connect) to an
(optional) 1 amp fuseholder, then from there to terminal 85 on the relay.
- Connect from terminal 86 on the relay to ground.
The remaining fan and thermoswitch connections are as before.
Now the relay is energized by the ignition, and provides a current path for the
fan that doesn't load the existing wiring. If you need a schematic I can draw
one up.

Regards,
Theo
