I've tried to acquire the original black plates to my Tiger  boriginally a 
Calif carb  and I was told by the folks at AAA that I would have to produce 
the original registration to them in order to get the plates. I had also 
heard that any car considered an "Antique Automobile" - not sure of the years 
involved - could get original black/yellow plates but possibly with the 
current combination of numbers & letters. I have never seen any car with such 
plates, though. I would enquire at the local AAA if you're a member. The DMV 
also has a website pretty well setup.. Check them out.
