Hi Dave,
The safest thing to do is to bypass the switch at your earliest convenience
(or inconvenience, which sounds like what's happening to you), and to put in
a brake pedal activated switch, that is powered from the
non-ignition-switched circuit. You can find such a switch in pretty much any
Japanese car, as well as some GM domestic models. You will need to make an L
or U-shaped bracket to hold the switch in place over the pedal, but at least
the pedal stop bolt holes provide a convenient attachment point for such a
bracket.
