Since you at first thougth gas tank fumes, I susspect a
crack or puncture in the vent crossover tube between the
tanks. I had the same problem when I replaced the tauno
hold dowmn studs.. One of the factory ones had punctured the
cross vent tube and left a hole when replaced.
The tube crosses over at the top of the trunk just behind
the soft top stoage area.
