Steve,
Please post your findings because I've had the same problem for over 10 
years.  Since 99 % of the time I drive top down it hasn't been an issue.  I've 
always thought it was a bad trunk gasket and have held off replacing it 
thinking I 
might paint the car and didn't want to tear off a seal that had been newly 
replaced.
