According to the Sunbeam manual; you should see 23.92 mph / 1000
engine rpm, that is with stock gears and stock tire size and circumference.
3000 rpm = 71.76 mph 4000 rpm = 95.68 mph 80 mph = 3344 rpm
Maybe you should make a speed chart for time in seconds per mile or
kilometer and use a stop watch to clock your time at a given speed. This
will give you a good check for an accurate speedometer.
I had a similar problem with my tach. I found that the rosin on
the circuit board of the tach was turning to powder and getting into the
works. I had to take the tach apart and very gently brush as much rosin
off the circuit board as possible and with very very low air pressure (1 to
2 psi) blow the rosin dust out of the tach. The delicate workings in the
tach will not take harsh treatment so be very careful with this procedure.
There is a potentiometer on the circuit board to adjust the tach
reading; you need an accurate rpm reading to do this or you need to send it
out for calibration. I used a digital tach meter to adjust mine on the
car.
There maybe other reasons why your tach is not working correctly; so
keep track of all the problems and ask the list.
