Dave and List,

While original factory manuals have been known to be incorrect, it is
worthwhile,
here, to check what Rootes (and Ford) had to say about re-bore limitations.

CYLINDER BLOCK
'260'

'289"

Material Cast Iron
As '260'

Max. oversize (bore) .060 in. (1.52 mm.)
0.040 in. (1.01 mm.)

It is in "General Data", on page 12, and can be viewed on TigersUnited.com:

Manual specifications have been shown to be incorrect, in the past. But THIS
one has been with us for some
time. Mass wholesale engine rebuilders standardly bore their rebuilds,
regardless of initial condition, to the maximum allowable. Take care when
buying one of these mass marketed rebuilds at Pep Boys, and others.

Oh, and DJ, even Carroll Shelby chose the 260 for his first Cobra prototype and
production cars, as Ford had yet to produced the 289 at that time.
