I took the top cover off a GM non-WC T5 to reseal and inspect. I don't have
any manual transmission rebuild experience but it looked pretty good to me
inside. The gears all looked very nice, some of the teeth on the brass
syncros looked a little chewed but not too bad.

How bad is bad, appearance-wise, for a T5 synchro? What else should I be
looking for to determine the health of this gearbox?

The transmission worked ok but was hard to get into 1st and 2nd when cold.
No gear grinding just hard to get it to shift. It also was hard to shift
down when the RPMs were high for the downshift. The GM manual says to use
ATF and this box had 90W in it. The manual says that can cause hard
shifting. It could explain the symptoms I was experiencing.

Anyhow, I know there are some pretty savvy T5 users out there. Any insight
would be appreciated.

Oh, one more thing, how hard is it to rebuild one of these boxes?
