Did you check the ignition timing? A few degrees too much can cause nasty
overheating even though you're not necessarily hearing any pinging. Make
sure you check the timing at 3000 RPM in addition to the idle setting... Who
knows if the distributor's advance is doing what it's supposed to.

PS: I've used muriatic acid mixed 50:50 with hot water to de-gunk heater
cores. Do NOT breathe in fumes if you try this, and make sure you flush the
system with clean water before refilling with an appropriate
water/antifreeze/lubricant/anticorrosion mixture. This process may also
dislodge previous applications of leak stopping agents...
