A friends father suffered a stroke some years and although he has recovered
beyond his doctors expectations he has limited use of his right side. One
consequence of this was he could no longer drive his TR3. His son, also a TR
enthusiast and an excellent mechanic devised a solution. A very nice TR6 was
purchased and then the call went out for a Triumph 2000 saloon with an
automatic. One was found by a resourceful associate in short order and a swap
was made. The process was apparently very straight forward. The Borg Warner
auto trans from the saloon was apparently also used in similar year Volvos
so having it refurbished was no problem. The installation is so clean it
appears to be a factory job right down to the "Automatic" badge on the back.
The 2000 saloon was sold off along with the TR6 box for what was paid for it.
The car also has a factory hardtop so there is no top wrestling.

This may not be the type of conversion you were thinking of but you may consider
it. Triumph 2000 saloons are a bit more common in Canada than California. Also
the car would still be all Triumph, and the process could probably be easily
reversed at a later date.

My second recommendation would be a Mazda rotary. They are small, and very
powerful, I'm not sure how well they work with an automatic.

Hope this helps
