Atwell,

        Are the hoses connected to the pump?  I would think this would cause 
some sound as the exhaust gases which were to be pumped back in to the intake 
system are now just dumping into the pump.  Connect the belt and see what 
happens.

Can a non-functioning emmissions air pump (belt is missing) cause a sound like 
an exhaust leak near the exhaust manifold/catalytic converter?    (79 Spit 1500 
Federal Specs)
