I encountered a similar problem with the salvage of the bonnet support frame
from my '73 Spitfire bonnet assembly after a minivan ran into me a couple of
years back. The car was thoroughly rust proofed and I tried all types of
thinners, chemicals and paint stripper to remove the rust proofing so that
the new bonnet would look uniform. After numerous hours of just contributing
to the messy gook I took the parts to Redi-Strip and had them dipped. It
might be worth looking into.
