What was this for? ++++++++++++++++++++ Joe my friend, what you are looking at is the switch that controls the instrument panel lights. My early Spit (1964) has the same set up. You need to have the headlilghts (or parking lights) turned on for it to work (and the wires hooked up - duh!).
