Hello Tom ,
The servo is to store 'canned' intake manifold vacuum, and then
release it when you step on the brake pedal. This vacuum then
assists in applying pressure to the brake master cylinder, so
that your apparent pedal pressure is reduced. I think it's
mainly a driver comfort feature, like power steering, as it's
not too hard to brake a little one-ton car to a halt without
the aid of the servo.
As for why your MG has no servo, it's obviously because that car
was made for people who want really crude, cheap, knuckle-walking
sorts of cars, like Fred Flintstone had, and because MG's budget
analysts were even tighter skinflints than the ones at Triumph.
