I may have missed the start of this thread...are fumes being detected at
all inside the trunk, or coming into the interior from around the trim
panel concealing the fuel tank from the car interior??

Nope - no fumes from INSIDE the car.  They are coming from the front of the
car as it is driven.  It's really weird.  My thought was that with the new 
filters perhaps I am getting a really good whiff of the fuel as the needles
are pulled down under heavy throttle and lots more gas gets sucked into the
intake system.  No leaks anywhere under the bonnet.
