My TR6 is the same way.  When I filled it all the way, you could really
smell the gas, and there was a noticeable leak.  So, now, whenever I fill 
it up, I keep the power turned on and watch the gauge go up.  When I get
it to about three quarters, I stop filling.  It eventually goes to the top, 
but it isn't quite as full as if I filled it until the pump shut off.
