TR3A door handles

Has anyone out there taken off the door handles on a TR3A? My 
particular car has the external handles with wood blocks inside the door
panel. The shaft of the handle is held to the latch mechanism with what
seems to be a metal sleeve, round with a triangular protrusion. Have
tried the usual chemicals, heat, brute force, etc. Any suggestions
appreciated.
