they do allow the top to be used, and also work with a hardtop. I had
Autopower
weld in a extra diagonal and horizontal braces, then had it powdercoated.

suggests the use of extra plates where the bar bolts to the rear parcel

I currently have one of these "street" rollbars in my TR4, which I got on
sale at TRF. I don't know who makes them, but everyone carries them. They
bolt to the flat package shelf and don't interfere with the operation of the
top. I think the TR4-6 use the same bar. That being said, I wouldn't want
to be in a rollover with it, although I suppose it's better than nothing and
it made me feel a little better on the street. I have some pretty serious
plates under the shelf and it still has some give to it.
Since I'm autocrossing the TR4 in Prepared class and have just gotten my
first set of BRAND NEW super-sticky slicks, I'm switching to an official SCCA
approved rollbar, made by Autopower, which is several inches higher than the
street bar and bolts to the floor. It won't allow the use of the top. I
noted on one of the vintage race lists recently that someone rolled their TR
several times with one of these bars and came away relatively uninjured...
that's good enough for me. Incidentally, I ordered the bar from IO Port
(800-949-5712), but there's lots of others selling them too.
