The last item I replaced this weekend was the accel bushings (the ones
which support the gas pedal shaft below the battery).

I found it easier to insert the bushings in the body after boiling them
in water for a few minutes. Even then they were quite nasty to get in. I
had to get a helper to work inside the engine compartment while I used a
hook tool to coax the lip of the bushing inside the car. Then it was
quite hard to get the pedal shaft back in the car as it is too long to
just go in straight and must be inserted at an angle - not easy to do
with a fresh bushing which fits quite tight around the shaft! But some
soap as lubricant and sufficient force made it go in.

The result is that the shaft has no play in it (the old bushings were
definitely worn, especially the the one on the carb side of the engine).
I still get some binding of the gas pedal though. Any ideas what I can
use to lube the bushings? I was afraid to use grease in case the bushing
material did not like it.
