Ian,
        The critical date is when the car was Built, not when it was
registered. Cars become eligible for Nil duty on the first January 1st
after 25 years. Any cars registered in January are accepted by DVLA as
being built in the preceding year (without argument, or so I'm told). As
you are only one day out, the chances are that your car was built in
1972, but you have to prove this to DVLA. To do this, your easiest route
is to obtain a build record trace from BMIHT. This costs around £25, but
I understand they can provide a simpler dating letter for a smaller
amount. 
        I haven't had this problem myself, but I have read quite a lot about
this issue in the Classic Car press, I hope it's of some help,
