John,

I pretty much ran into the same problem after I replaced the rod
bearings on my '58 3A. When I got everything back together I found
I had to pump the clutch pedal like mad in order to get the clutch
to disengage. I rebuilt the slave and master cylinder but it didn't
help.

It turns out that one of the things I did after changing the bearings
was to replace the junky stretched out spring which was on the slave
cylinder with a brand new one from TRF. This spring was much stronger
that the one I replaced and and was pulling the slave cylinder piston
back into the bore much farther than the old spring did. What I've
done for now is to make a longer slave cylinder push rod and adjust the
slave's clearance with the piston all the way at the bottom of the
bore. The new push rod I made is 6 inches long and I'm pretty sure
that the original push rod is about 5 inches long. After installing
the new push rod I think I could have made it about 1/2 an inch
shorter and it would have been just fine.

Now the problem is trying to figure out why I need such a long push
rod. The only reason I've been able to come up with is that the slave
is mounted on the wrong side of the mounting plate which attaches
to the bell housing. The ears on my slave are on the "front" side
of the plate. Given the thichness of the ears and the mounting plate
it seems that if the slave was mounted such that the ears were on
the "rear" side of the plate the length of the old push rod would be
just about right. The pictures in the TR3 factory workshop manual
show the ears of the earlier Lockheed slave cylinder being on the
rear side of the plate but the Moss catalog shows ears of the newer
Girling cylinder on the front side.

So I've got a couple of questions for all you TR3 owners out there.
Which side of the mounting plate are the ears of your slave cylinder
mounted on? And do you know what the length of you slave cylinder push
rod is?

Thanks,
Drew
