This would connect the field to the armature on the generator. This
allow the armature to power the field, increasing the voltage on that
armature, which then increases the power to the field , until the
generator is putting out the most voltage it can from this situation.


I think that what you want to do is measure the voltage from the 2
terminals that are shorted together and ground, then compare to the
voltage they give as a reference.

This will not cause any damage.
