Tom, I think the news may be good (especially in light of Bob Kamholtz's
posting)...

If it really is a TR6 O/D then I believe you have an A-type. J-types have a
number with the pattern "25/xxxxx yyyyyy" (mine is 25/115876 002757 for
example). The 25 represents the % reduction in engine rpm at a given speed
when the O/D is engaged. The 002757 is a sequential serial number for the
unit. The middle set of numbers represents the specific flavor of J-type it
is -- other cars than TR6s used J-type O/Ds, so a few flavors do exist.

I'm pretty sure the A-type O/Ds used the 22% reduction. Thus their number
pattern would be "22/xxxxx yyyyyy". I am sure those on the list with A-type
O/Ds will be able to confirm. Also, according to the Moss catalog, the
TR250, TR5 and pre Mar/71 TR6 used the A-type with the 61753 middle number.
Later A-type equipped TR6s used a 61985 middle number. (And for
completeness, J-type numbers were 115838 for CF1 to CF35000, and 115876 for
the rest -- again, according to the Moss catalog)

Other ways to tell is to look at the solenoid -- the J-type has a (black
usually) cylinder mounted horizontally and about the size of a coke can
(little smaller maybe). I don't know what an A-type solenoid looks like but
the parts manuals should have pretty good pictures. For one thing they are
vertically mounted.

I think you are in luck!

( I suspect others may attempt to give you contradictory information. This
information may be combined with a seemingly kind and generous offer to free
you of the burden of cleaning, testing and installing the unidentified O/D.
