No, you didn't conect it wrong. If it worked, it was connected properly. Had
you connected it wrong, the lights would have been on bright all the time,
with no dimming action.
Which is how I recommend you connect it -- wrong.
Evidently, either one of the wires fell off, or, by coincidence, the dimmer
just chose this time to fail. I would just connect both wires to two of the
terminals that are connected together, bypassing the rheostat altogether.
