Wayne,
It seems that you have already decided to spend a good portion of
your time doing the lower engine portion. So, it might just be
the right time to get the head machined also. Especially if it
was never done previously. Now, you're at the point whether to go
all the way and remove the engine, clean it, bore the cylinders
0.020" and replace the pistons and rings. Gee, I'd vote go for it!
One big difference I felt was replacing the timing chain and cam and
crank gears. That's a small incremental amount of work if you
just do the lower end.
As you can tell, I just rebuilt my engine this winter. Last week
I tried to start it, and, of course, having some problems. Maybe
just bad distributor timing or off by a couple of degrees in the
crank/cam timing. But, still, I'd reccomend a full engine rebuild.
Just my $0.02 (or less) worth.
Of course, it's more work. But I think that extra amount will
make a difference and you'll have a solid engine
