Bill-
Years ago a friend stuffed a wad of fiberglas house insulation under
his transmission tunnel, in an attempt to reduce both the heat and noise
levels in the cockpit. It was effective for those purposes, but the
shifter temperature indicated the tranny was getting way too hot because of
the reduced airflow. Also to be considered- Insulation will soak up the
inevitable "Controlled Seepage" oil and carefully hold it above the exhaust
headpipe, clearly an invitation to an unplanned Barbeque. Whatever you
decide, make sure there is still some room for the air to flow around the
Gearbox!

Subject: TR-3, Insulating Transmission Hump

I am thinking about insulating my transmission hump. I am thinking
about using heatshield material part number 409-015, insulating it
underneath and attaching it with high temp silcone sealant sold at wood
burning stove stores. BTW, my 3 has a TR-6 OD trans in it.
My theory is that I want to stop the heat from reaching the steel hump
in the first place, rather than trying to insulate the interior from the hot
hump.
     Any suggestions?
