You're too smart for your own good. When using a case spreader you 
snug up the nuts or whatever on the threaded rod and then just a 
little more. Then you try to take the gear out. If it doesn't, you 
tighten(spread) just a LITTLE more and try again. If you do this very 
cautiously, you won't damage the case. My homemade spreader uses 
common threaded from the hardware store.
