Jonathan, the only thing the oil in the dashpots does is dampen the upward
action of the carb piston when you accelerate.
Check your air/fuel mixture. The purpose of the choke is to richen (i.e more
fuel in the air/fuel ratio) the mixture. The purpose of the choke is to lift
the piston a little bit thereby richening the mixture. Since the car runs OK
with the choke out a little, you could possibly have the carbs too lean.
