When I re-did my recently acquired 74.5 TR6 last year, the seat foams were
completely shot, like yours. But the upholstery itself seemed in very good
condition, no cuts or tears. I think it was original, thus 25 years old.
Anyway, to save money and retain the original look, I asked a professional
shop to put my new foams inside and rebuild the seats using the original
covering. This was probably a mistake by me, but I fault the shop for not
warning me about what might happen (seems like they should have known).
Although they did a nice job, and the seats looked great, within a week I
had a couple holes "pop through" in normal use. The newly stretched, old
brittle material apparently couldn't take the new stresses introduced by
the rebuild process.
You may have better luck than I if you decide to go this route. For sure,
though, I would recommend the precut seat foams available to us, rather
than trying to cobble up some new padding. That seems like lots of work
with maximum aggravation.
