IMO this is due entirely to the rather anemic charging systems.  My
previous TR3A would always start, even stored outdoors in an Indiana
winter and when other cars wouldn't, as long as the battery was
charged.  But no way would the stock generator keep it charged, even
with the regulator turned up until the generator would burn out.  Even
the owner's manual (which I didn't have at the time) says to charge the
battery after a winter run.
