and using the standard triumph muffler clamps the air would escape through

Harry, most muffler shops use a pipe sealant (refractory paste) on these
connections just for this reason. There is little you can do about it but
don't be too concerned about it since only a little bit of exhaust is
leaking out and it is under the car and underway it represents no threat.
Mine does the same thing.
