You've got a bulb out, or the oil pressure switch doesn't work, or
there's a bad wire/connection somewhere.  Both the brake and oil
pressure lights should glow (dimly) when you turn the key on without
starting the engine.  This is completely independant of the brakes
themselves, it's just to show that the warning light is good.  The two
bulbs are wired in series, so each only sees 6v in this configuration. 
If the wrong bulbs are in the holders, they may not light bright enough
to see.

Your brakes sounds normal to me, the pedal should never get rock solid.
