I forgot to add, I've seen batteries have broken conductors inside the case,
such that they will sometimes pass a load test (when the broken ends are
touching), but fail to start the car.  I had a rather heated dispute with a
local discount parts house a few years ago, they refused to replace my
almost-new battery with this problem, until I took them the battery in the
car, let them charge the battery (agreeing to pay for the charge if it
turned out to be my charging system), and then try to start the car.  Even
then, they tried to say my starter was defective !  It couldn't possibly be
the battery, after their automated tester said it was good ...
