Thanks to those who responded already!

Yes, it does look as if I got vinyl, not the leather I requested.  
Several tests (including the destructive one!) provided the same 
results on both small samples (melting, burnt plastic smell).  

I, too, have never seen leather that needed a cloth backing.

Looks like I'm about to learn a lot about international shipping!
