Paul,
>From what you discribe I would guess that if you can get the engine to
run at higher rpms some of the shavings have worked thier way down into
the advance mechanism and are jaming it at full advance thus causing it
to have to much advance to stay running at idle.

Just my $0.02

| I have just finished a tune-up of my 64 TR4. I replaced points,
condenser,
| cap, rotor, plug wires - all purchased from one of the big 3 mail
order
| suppliers. The car ran fine for 3 miles and died (in the middle of a
busy
| So.Cal intersection).
|
| Upon taking off the cap, I noticed that there were metal shavings all
over
| the outside of the distributer plate. Apparently, either the new cap
or
new
| rotor did not fit properly and cut grooves into the contact points
inside
| the cap. I put on the old cap and rotor and it started right up, but
almost
| immediately died again. I got it started once more and it ran fine for
30
| seconds at 2500 RPM. When I tried to bring the RPM down, it stalled
again
| and now wont start.
|
| What are the common failures that would cause this?
|
| Thanks in advance
|
