Dave, not only are some modern starters permanent magnet, but it appears I
was wrong about Lucas not making any.  See

for a Lucas caution about accepting PM starters for return, and

for a nice description of the permanent magnet starters.

I still don't believe Triumph ever used any of these, the magnet technology
wasn't discovered until sometime in the 80's ...
