>Sorry for the non-LBC question. Car involved is a 95 Corolla. The wipers
are
slow, etc. I tested the battery and got 12.5 volts with the engine off.
With
the engine on, I got essentially the same reading. But race the engine and
the reading is 14+. Is this variance consistent with an alternator
problem?
The belt seems tight enough. But why would the alternator need to be raced
to
have output?

This is not uncommon if there are considerable loads on the electrical
system. If the radiator fans are running and the lights are on the voltage
usually does fall at idle. The critical question is does the battery stay
charged. If so then don't worry about it.
