Hi Hugh
I have welded up and dressed flat the lands for the thrust washers on the
bearing cap myself in the past, on a Herald 13/60 engine, it lasted a few
thousand miles before the thrust washers fell out again, on inspection the
edge of the weld had rounded over, leading to the diagnosis that the weld
was far to soft. I guess if you had the washers pinned and whilst doing this
had the cap machined to take a washer as well (I believe this is a standard
upgrade for these blocks anyway) then you would satisfactorily repair the
block. I guess what I am saying is I don't think the weld up job lasts long
enough! To justify that statement, I am a tool maker have welding
qualifications and the work was carried out to a high level of accuracy, the
only thing I could not do on a Sunday at home was change the hardness /
toughness of the metal, though I am not convinced they are anything other
than as cast anyway.
