James, I'll second what others have said, IMO that's not normal.  If it's
that soft, it should be fairly easy (although somewhat tedious) to reshape
the tip with just a file.  A bench grinder will of course make short work of
it.  You'll likely have to grind or file away the entire tip where it is
rounded.  Try to keep the square as large as possible, so it fits snugly in
the buttons, and with a shallow taper.

I always carry a 'Tinker' model Victorinox Swiss army knife, the screwdriver
tip in it fits the hood and side curtain Dzus buttons well enough, but I
feel that over time, it eventually wears the socket in the Dzus button.  And
of course, it is not long enough to reach the socket in the spare tire
cover.

One alternative might be to get a large 'T-handle' hex wrench and grind the
tip down to the required tapered square profile.  That's what came with my
lathe as a chuck key, and it seems to work quite well.
