Four-year frame-off restoration is coming back together, put tub back on
chassis New Years Eve.
Just got around to the gas tank. I had sandblasted some rust on the bottom of
the tank, over the diff. hump, and wound up with three tiny (less than 1/8")
holes.
Later, I bought a tank from a car being parted out. It had been sitting for
some time, had the "varnish" that old gas becomes. Put in some paint stripper,
sloshed it around, let it sit, then washed it out. Got the crud out, only to
discover some rust on the inside of the top, looks kinda like Georgia clay. It
won't wash out; what I can reach with a rod has to be scraped off.
Has anyone on the list dealt with a either situation ?
What is the recommended repair for tiny holes in the bottom of a fuel tank ?
Is there any chemical, etching agent, whatever, that will remove the clay-like
rust ?
I have a tank lining kit, consisting of small bottles of washing agent and
"prep" agent, as well as the sealer. However, I don't want to waste the prep
agent if it won't remove the rust, and don't want to rely on just the sealer to
contain the fuel at the holes.
