Pete, that is what the sound they're trying to mimic actually is.
That sound was produced and aired originally on a Finnish radio station who
were attempting display what a certain two stroke motorbike engine sounded
like on their radio show. There have been lengthy, in-depth discussions
about the history of this sound file on rec.autos.sport.f1 (search
GoogleGroups).
