convert a car from one type of ground to the other.
Mine came from Radio shack and was a box about 3" x 3" x 6"
It made an annoying high pitched whine any time it was connected.

Technology has improved tremendously since then. Modern day switchers
easily run at 1 MHz, well out of your range of hearing. Even your dog
can't hear it.
You were right to throw it away. And unless originality is important, you
were right to switch to Neg Gnd.
