I have read that silicone absorbs a lot more air than standard fluids. That
apparently makes the pedal mushy. It seems a poor choice, rust and ruined
paint, or spongy brakes with your heart in your mouth every time you brake.
I have stuck with DOT 4 for now. One thing in my experience, if you use
standard fluid bought from the auto store instead of lockheed or girling
(for non-silicone) it seems to ruin the seals in no time. That's probably
well known to eveybody on the list but me, but I didn't listen and learned
an expensive lesson.

However if you are getting a problem that no amount of bleeding will solve
and you don't have fluid leaking out the MC then you might suspect a
dragging brake. If a disc or shoe is too tight then it will constantly drag
and heat up the caliper/cylinder. If so you can end up boiling the fluid in
the cylinder and creating a vapour bubble. This will render your brakes very
spongy to completely useless. I always check for this by touching my wheel
rims after a run every week or so. A rim warmer than the others signifies
something is wrong.

Thanks for the "Heads Up", Rick!

Did my break rebuild and change to DOT 5 in Nov '97.......no trouble
yet, but
I'll sure keep an eye on it......no more repaints of the engine bay
however........think I'd rather replace the master cylinders than
repaint the
bay.......did you replace all the brake cylinders as well, when it got
mushy?
