Hi Jim et al.

Any ideas regarding the use of a Spitfire (Mk 1 to Mk 3) diff together with
a GT 6 (Mk 1) engine and o/d gearbox from a 2000 or 2500 saloon? Good idea /
bad idea?

Which calls to mind another thing to consider.  In the Spitfire, cars 
with OD had the same diff as those without OD, so the OD gave you a 
higher gear for the highway and a bit more shifting versatility.  On 
the GT6 they did things differently.  (Lemme' see if I can get this 
straight.)  Cars destined for non-US had the same diff (3.27:1) with 
or without OD, which gave "ridiculously high gearing".  US OD cars 
had a lower (numerically higher, 3.89:1) diff, so you ended up with 
similar highway rpms but lower gearing when OD was off, which 
translated into slightly better acceleration and lower shift points.

Now, if you do your own OD swap you don't have to follow these rules, 
of course.  But you probably won't be able to use factory-standard 
components such as speedo drive and such.  Instead, you'll have to 
find your own solutions.  As Doug pointed out, at the very least your 
gears will be way too low.  So you'll probably want to swap the diff 
to something geared higher, which will change the speedo readings 
too.  Seems like it would be easier to find a GT6 OD gearbox (or 
convert your own) and go with the Euro-style high gearing.
