As usual, I'm 24 hours or more behind everyone else (because I'm in Digest
mode) in learning about Randall's accident. The good thing is Randall wasn't
hurt, though I suspect his love for his car and his emotions attached to it
are sorely battered.
At this point, I feel I can break cover and let the list know that Randall's
seemingly encyclopaedic knowledge about "technical matters Triumph" have
impressed a few of the older 'factory' hands in the UK who are definitely
periodic lurkers to the extent that we have christened him 'Mr. Ivy
Cottage.' This accolade is genuine because Ivy Cottage was originally where
the technical gurus at Standard-Triumph worked in Coventry and Randall has
contributed so much to this list in the time I've been on it that his
contributions have been vital to the furtherance of the hobby - and his
nickname is well justified.
The tragedy in this 'coming together' of metal on metal is that it always
seems to happen to the nice guys one encounters in this and many other
pastimes - and so often, the pains-in-the-butt seem to get away scot-free
from similar troubles and problems.
I suppose there is little that any of us can do to assist Mr Ivy Cottage in
his forthcoming insurance company battle to extract maximum monies for his
beloved sidescreener - but there IS something we can do for him to help him
spend the cheque he'll ultimately receive.
I suggest everyone is that bit more vigilant when poring through club
magazines, newspaper classifieds, ebay and wherever else and be first past
the post in letting Randall know when a car deserving of his attention comes
up for grabs. Personally, I think that those who do uncover something of
potential interest could pay it a visit with a digital camera and try a bit
of haggling on the price or block other viewers until Randall can give his
own opinion. In other words, a bit of bestirment to help a friend in need?
Randall's contributions in helping people overcome their problems are legion
and I feel the time has undeniably come for the rest of us to try and help
him - if we can.
