Some times they bind up pretty tightly.  I've had good luck using a pair of
prybars (wrapped with friction tape to cushion the surface I pry against),
one on each side to apply an even pull.  But at some point, you have to
decide whether it's better to destroy the knob (new reproductions are cheap)
or the switch (repros are mostly available, but they ain't cheap).
