While I'm also only guessing, I think that means this engine could not be
original for a Sportsman.  Note the closed crankcase breather on the rocker
cover and HS6 carbs, these would be for a much later car.

Also found on TRs, for the same reason.

The filter head and canister look correct to me for a later TR.  Early ones
were different, but the second threaded hole indicates this was a "full
flow" head, not a bypass head as the early TR2-3 had.

The double exit exhaust manifold also looks to me like a TR4A part.

I'm voting for the explanation offered earlier ... this engine was fitted in
a TR4A and is a prime example of "keeping it on the road" using whatever
parts come to hand.  I've done something similar with the thermostat housing
myself, just went to the local parts house and searched until I found one
that would bolt up, then found a hose that would mate with the radiator from
the rather odd outlet of the housing.  The result got me from Texas to
California !

Can't see the fuel pump clearly, but it looks like it might be a TR6 unit
...
