Well that may be true in more temperate climes, but here in the desert I
very often have to run my electric fan to keep the engine temperature below
200 degrees even at freeway speeds!

For many (most?) cars, you only really need a fan when the car is moving
very slowly or is stationary.  At highway speeds, air flow cause by movement
of the vehicle is usually enough to dissipate the heat discharged from the
radiator.  Now, let me add this modifier - I have no personal experience
with an electric fan on a TR3 (although I intend to put one on mine, at some
point, and I will try it with the original fan removed), but it seems to me
that in former discussions of this issue (and there have been a lot of
them), many listers agreed that the original fan should be removed.
