Al, I think everything is just as you describe (assuming these are HS6 carbs)
... so go down to the local auto parts house and buy a universal throttle return
spring, then add it to the linkage in a suitable fashion.  Can't tell you
offhand where it was anchored, but I've seen the big spring on TR4As (which were
originally equipped with SU HS6 carbs).
