Hi Tom,

I've got a 2-3/4 ton "Torin - Big Red", el-cheapo, made-in-China floor jack,
which was bought dirt cheap from a local auto parts store, probably Kragen
(aka Checkers, etc.).

I needed a larger jack to accomodate other vehicles, 4400 lbs. and up.

However, the working end of this jack drops quite low and fits easily under
my lowered TR4 without any problem (5" ground clearance approx). The handle end
of the jack won't fit under the car unless it was already lifted a bit, but
that really isn't a problem. The only car I've had trouble with is my
girlfriend's Grand Am, which is so low on the front corners that I have to lift
the car
slightly by hand to initially slip the jack under.

The jack came with a typical round, metal, "toothed" saddle. When working on
TRs I switch to a flat, rubber covered pad that slips in to replace the
original saddle and is much kinder to flat Triumph frame rails. I got this
"soft
lift" pad from Eastwood Co. (their item #43183), but it's probably available a
variety of places. Transmission/diff cradles are also available to fit this
type
jack, which uses a common size center post.

My only complaint is that this jack is heavy and a bit difficult to move
around. It handles the lifting job with ease, though.

Cheers!

I'm in need a better, lower, full sized floor jack and want the collective
wisdom of the list. I need a low profile to get under the TR3 and TR4 and
would like to not have to drive up on blocks before I start jacking. Any
ideas would be appreciated.
Tom
